Shockwave Therapy

At Shield Chiropractic we are proud to offer a wide range of treatment modalities to aid in your journey to recovery.

One of the most effective tools we have available for the treatment for various musculoskeletal conditions is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy.

This is a high-tech, non-invasive treatment option for people who suffer connective tissue conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, golfers’ elbow, and tennis elbow.

How does Shockwave Therapy work?

High pressure acoustic shockwaves are produced by the shockwave device which are directed into the affected tissues by the chiropractor.

As the shockwaves enter the body, they stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms for new bone and tissue formation. Shockwaves can also help to break down injured tissues and calcifications.

The most effective protocol for shockwave therapy is to have 4 treatments spaced roughly one week apart. There can be some mild discomfort during and immediately after the treatments, but it is usually short lived and precedes an improvement in the overall condition.

What can Shockwave Therapy Treat?

Shockwave therapy has been shown to be clinically effective for the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Calcific tendonitis

  • Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow)

  • Medial epicondylitis (Golfers elbow)

  • Insertional Achilles tendonitis

  • Non-insertional Achilles tendonitis

  • Plantar fasciitis

What can you expect during a Shockwave Therapy treatment?

In the initial assessment, we will conduct a full history and examination in order to reach a diagnosis. After this we will discuss the nature of the problem and what treatments would be appropriate. Shockwave therapy may be recommended at this stage, and we can talk this through thoroughly before a decision is made to proceed. You will have every opportunity to ask questions, and there will be no obligation to go ahead with shockwave treatment; you are always at the driver’s seat!

At Shield Chiropractic we believe the best treatments involve a variety of appropriate treatment modalities, so as well as administering shockwave treatment, the chiropractor will also use the variety of tools and techniques available in standard chiropractic care.

How Successful is Shockwave Therapy?

Most research papers published on the efficiency of extracorporeal shockwave therapy and its case studies suggest beneficial and positive outcomes. On average, 65% to 91% of patients show a marked recovery, with low to negligible complications.

Does Shockwave Therapy hurt?

Whilst there can be some discomfort during and immediately after the treatment, it is generally well tolerated and a sign that the treatment is working. If during treatment you find that it is too painful, then the chiropractor can make adjustments to the shockwave device to make it more comfortable.

Most people will experience a reduction in their symptoms following the treatment, but a general ache in the area a few hours later is normal. Over the counter pain killers can be taken to help alleviate the discomfort if necessary, but anti-inflammatory medications are not recommended as these may interfere with the body’s healing mechanisms.

Fees

The cost of a single shockwave appointment is £80 but as the best protocol to achieve a successful outcome with shockwave therapy is to have four treatments spaced out a week apart, there is a discount for block booking: for treatments will cost just £290, a saving of £30!
